Ombré and powder brows, created with a technique called microshading, are one of the most popular and longest lasting permanent makeup eyebrow treatments in Toronto. In this complete guide we cover everything you need to know about ombré powder brows, including how they differ from microblading, who they suit and how much they cost, so you can decide if they are right for your perfect brows.
PMU: Semi-Permanent Makeup
Full, defined brows frame your eyes and pull your whole face together, and not everyone is born with them. If you have sparse, uneven or over plucked brows, PMU semi-permanent makeup is the modern way to wake up with makeup-ready eyebrows every day.
PMU has several techniques, including microblading, nano brows, fusion or hybrid brows, and the soft, shaded technique this guide is about: ombré and powder brows, also known as microshading.
1. What Are Ombré and Powder Brows?
Ombré and powder brows are made with microshading, a permanent makeup technique that builds your brow from thousands of tiny dots of pigment. Using an ultra-fine nano-needle that only touches the top layer of the skin, we gradually layer the dots to create a soft, airbrushed gradient that looks like neatly applied brow powder or pencil. The front of the brow fades softly and the colour builds toward the tail, which is where the ombré effect gets its name.

The finished look is a smooth, filled-in, makeup-ready brow that stays put all day. Because the pigment is dispersed in fine dots rather than carved in as strokes, powder brows are smudge proof and waterproof, and they hold up beautifully through humidity, workouts and busy mornings.
2. Are Ombré Brows and Powder Brows the Same Thing?
Mostly, yes. Ombré brows, powder brows, shaded brows and microshading all describe the same family of technique, a soft, powdery, shaded finish. The small difference is in the gradient: powder brows tend to be more evenly filled from front to tail, while ombré brows fade lighter at the front and deepen toward the tail for a more graduated look. At your consultation we tailor the gradient and intensity to the style you want.
3. Why Should You Consider Ombré Powder Brows?
Ombré powder brows are a wonderful choice if you want a defined, filled-in brow that looks like soft makeup and lasts for years. They are also the go to option for clients whose skin does not suit microblading, since the shading technique holds pigment far better on oily and larger pored skin.
You should consider ombré powder brows if you:
- Want a soft, makeup-ready, filled-in brow without drawing them on each day.
- Have oily, combination or larger pored skin that does not hold microblading well.
- Have a darker skin tone and want a technique that suits it beautifully.
- Prefer a more defined, powdered finish over individual hair strokes.
- Want a long lasting result that is smudge proof and waterproof.

4. Who Are Ombré Powder Brows Ideal For?
One of the biggest advantages of ombré powder brows is how widely they suit different skin types, especially the ones microblading cannot serve:
- Ideal for oily skin and large pores, where microblading strokes tend to blur.
- Ideal for those who want a bolder, more filled-in, makeup style brow.
- Great for darker skin tones.
- Great for anyone who wants a long lasting, low maintenance brow.
- For full eyebrow recovery or rebuilding lost brows, we usually recommend fusion brows instead, which combine strokes and shading.
If you have had permanent makeup or a brow tattoo done elsewhere, please contact us before booking so we can assess your brows and recommend the right correction or cover up.
5. How Long Do Ombré Powder Brows Last?
Ombré powder brows typically last two to three years, often longer than microblading because the shaded pigment holds better in the skin. As with all permanent makeup, your skin type, sun exposure, lifestyle and skincare routine affect how quickly they fade.
Oily skin and active exfoliating products fade pigment faster, while a gentle routine helps your brows last longer. We recommend a colour boost every twelve to twenty four months to keep your ombré brows looking fresh and defined.
6. Are Ombré Powder Brows Better for Oily Skin Than Microblading?
For most oily and larger pored skin, yes. Microblading creates fine incisions, and on oily skin the extra oil can blur those crisp strokes and make them fade faster. Microshading instead deposits soft dots of pigment across the surface, which heals more reliably and keeps its shape on skin types where microblading struggles. It is the technique we most often recommend for oily skin in Toronto.
7. Are Ombré Powder Brows Painful?
Ombré powder brows are gentle and comfortable. The technique is less invasive than microblading because there are no incisions, just fine dots of pigment applied to the surface of the skin. We use a premium topical numbing cream, so most clients feel only light pressure, and some even relax or doze off during the roughly three hour service.
8. What Are the Downsides of Ombré Powder Brows?
Ombré powder brows have very few downsides, but we are always honest about what to expect:
- They give a soft, filled-in makeup look rather than the individual hair-stroke realism of microblading, so if you want a very natural, hair-like brow, fusion brows may suit you better.
- It is a two appointment service. Your brows are finished at the complimentary Perfecting Touch Up, 4 to 8 weeks later.
- There is a short aftercare and healing period of about two weeks, where you protect the brows from water, makeup, sweat and sun.
- You will still need the occasional plucking or threading to tidy stray hairs around your new shape.
9. Ombré Brows vs Microblading vs Fusion Brows
Microblading creates individual hair strokes and is best for normal to dry skin. Ombré and powder brows (microshading) build a soft, shaded gradient and suit all skin types, including oily skin. Fusion brows combine both for the most natural depth and the best longevity, and are our top pick for eyebrow recovery and rebuilding. 10. How Much Do Ombré Powder Brows Cost in Toronto?
At Iconbrows, ombré powder brows are CA $700 and include a complimentary Perfecting Touch Up, with the service taking about three hours. A new client cover up or correction of previous work is CA $900. Across Toronto, brow PMU ranges from around CA $400 to over CA $1,500, so choose your artist on skill, reviews and healed results rather than price alone. You can see current pricing on our ombré powder brows service page.

The Ombré Powder Brows Process
An Iconbrows ombré powder brows treatment takes about three hours, and your complimentary Perfecting Touch Up four to eight weeks later takes a little less. A typical appointment follows these steps:
- Step 1: Consultation and brow mapping. We measure your face and design your new shape with a brow pencil, then wait for you to review and approve it before we begin.
- Step 2: Pigment selection. We blend pigments to match your natural hair colour and skin tone, and agree on how soft or bold you want the gradient.
- Step 3: Shading. Using a nano-needle, we layer thousands of fine pigment dots to build the soft, powdered gradient and define your shape.
- Step 4: Review. We refine the brows with you and make any final adjustments to the colour and shape.
- Step 5: Aftercare. We provide aftercare instructions and contact details, and book your Perfecting Touch Up.

Ombré Powder Brows Aftercare
Following your aftercare is the single biggest thing you can do to protect your healed result. Here are the key guidelines:
- Do not touch your new brows or the area around them for at least 24 to 48 hours, so they can heal undisturbed.
- After 24 hours, gently clean the brows with a fragrance free cleanser and water using clean hands, never a washcloth or sponge, moving in the direction of hair growth.
- Air dry or gently dab the brows with a clean towel, and apply only the aftercare serum we provide. Do not use vaseline, petroleum or other ointments.
- Do not pick, rub or scratch as the brows scab and flake. It is a normal part of healing, and picking can cause patchiness or scarring.
- Avoid direct sun, tanning beds, pools, saunas, steam rooms and hot baths for about three weeks.
- Avoid heavy sweating, the gym and intense activity for 7 to 14 days, and avoid sleeping on your face for the first 10 days.
- No makeup, botox or facials near the brows for about two weeks, and no chemical or exfoliating treatments for about four weeks.
- Once healed, wear SPF 30 to 50 over the brows when out in the sun to keep the colour from fading.
Please note: your ombré powder brows will look about 20 to 40 percent bolder and darker for the first 24 to 48 hours, then soften and lighten as they heal over roughly four to six weeks. Any unevenness is corrected at your Perfecting Touch Up. For more detail, see our aftercare instructions and PMU pre-care guide.

Conclusion
Ombré and powder brows give you a soft, makeup-ready, perfectly defined brow that lasts for years and suits even oily skin, the kind of skin microblading cannot always serve. They are smudge proof, waterproof and wonderfully low maintenance, freeing you from filling your brows in every morning.
