Thinking about microblading but not sure what you are signing up for? This complete first timer guide explains exactly how microblading semi permanent brows work, what the experience is really like, and whether the technique fits your skin and your goals, so you can book with confidence.
Semi-Permanent Brows, Explained Simply
Microblading is a cosmetic tattoo technique, but a very specific and delicate one. Rather than a solid block of colour, the artist deposits pigment into the upper layer of the skin as tiny, individual hair like strokes. Because those strokes sit so shallow and follow your own hair growth, the healed brow reads as real hair rather than makeup. It is called semi permanent because the pigment gradually fades over a few years instead of staying forever like a body tattoo.
It is one of several permanent makeup options, alongside ombre and powder brows, nano brows and fusion brows. This guide focuses on microblading on its own, so you can understand it clearly before comparing it to the rest.
1. How Does Microblading Actually Work?
During a microblading appointment, your artist uses a fine handheld blade made up of several micro needles to create crisp, shallow strokes in the skin, working pigment into each one. There is no machine, the entire result is created by hand, which is why the artist skill matters so much. At Iconbrows every stroke is placed to follow your natural hair direction, so the finished brow blends seamlessly with the hairs you already have.

Because each stroke is drawn individually, microblading is closer to artistry than a standard tattoo. The artist is effectively painting brows onto your face, hair by hair, tailored to your features rather than stamping a single shape.
2. Is Microblading Right for My Skin Type?
This is the most important question to ask before booking, because microblading is not a one technique fits all service. The strokes hold best on skin that is not producing a lot of oil:
- Best suited to normal and dry skin, where the strokes stay crisp.
- Works well when you have at least some existing brow hair to blend with.
- Less suited to very oily skin and large pores, where strokes can blur and fade faster.
- Less suited to mature skin around 50 plus, which often does better with shading.
- For oily, combination or mature skin, fusion brows or ombre powder brows are usually recommended instead.
If you are unsure where your skin falls, take the Brow Matrix quiz or book a free consultation and we will be honest about whether microblading or another technique will give you the best result.
3. What Can Microblading Fix?
Microblading is wonderful for adding definition and natural fullness. People most often come to us to:
- Fill sparse areas, gaps or over plucked spots.
- Reshape uneven or asymmetrical brows for better balance.
- Add subtle thickness to naturally thin brows.
- Stop the daily routine of drawing brows on with pencil or powder.
- Restore a natural brow look that frames and lifts the whole face.

4. Does Microblading Hurt, and What Is the Appointment Like?
Most clients are surprised by how comfortable it is. We apply a topical numbing agent so you typically feel only light scratching or pressure, and many people relax or even doze off. A full appointment runs about three hours, most of which is consultation, mapping and design rather than the strokes themselves. There is no real downtime, and you can head back to your day straight after.
5. How Dark Will My Brows Look at First?
Right after your appointment your brows will look bolder and darker than the final result, often noticeably so for the first day or two. This is completely normal. As the skin heals over the following weeks the colour softens and lightens significantly. We always work conservatively at the first session, going a touch lighter and smaller, so your skin can settle before we refine everything at the touch up.
6. How Long Does Microblading Last?
Microblading lasts around two to three years for most people before the pigment fades into the skin. Your skin type, sun exposure, skincare routine and lifestyle all affect the pace, with oily skin and active ingredients like retinol or exfoliating acids fading faster. Most clients return for a refresh every twelve to twenty four months to keep their brows looking defined.
7. Why Is the Touch Up So Important?
Microblading is a two step process, and the result is not truly finished until the second appointment. After your brows heal, some strokes may have lightened or dropped out unevenly as part of natural healing. The Perfecting Touch Up, done about four to eight weeks later, fills those in, balances the colour and locks in the longevity. Skipping it means patchier, shorter lived brows, which is why we include it with your service.
8. How Should I Prepare and Heal?
A little preparation gives a better result. In the days before your appointment, avoid blood thinners such as alcohol, caffeine, fish oil and certain pain relievers, and pause retinol and exfoliating acids near the brows. During healing, keep the brows clean and dry, do not pick at any scabbing, and avoid sun, sweat, swimming and makeup on the area until it has settled. We send you full aftercare instructions so nothing is left to guesswork.
9. How Much Does Microblading Cost in Toronto?
At Iconbrows, microblading is CAD $700 and includes your free Perfecting Touch Up, so the full two step treatment is covered in one price, with the service taking about three hours and a $100 deposit at booking. Across Toronto, brow PMU can range from around CA $350 to over CA $1,500, so it is worth choosing your artist on skill, reviews and healed results rather than price alone. You can see current pricing on our microblading service page.

The Microblading Process
An Iconbrows microblading appointment takes about three hours, with the Perfecting Touch Up four to eight weeks later. A typical first visit follows these steps:
- Step 1: Paperwork and consultation. We review your medical history, skin type and goals to confirm microblading is the right fit.
- Step 2: Mapping and design. We measure your face and draw your new shape with a brow pencil, then wait for you to approve it before any strokes are made.
- Step 3: Pigment selection. We blend pigments to match your natural hair colour and skin tone.
- Step 4: Microblading. We create the individual hair like strokes by hand, following your natural growth direction.
- Step 5: Review and aftercare. We refine the brows with you, provide written aftercare and book your Perfecting Touch Up.
Microblading Aftercare
Aftercare has a direct impact on how well your brows heal and how long they last. The essentials are:
- Do not touch the brows for the first 24 to 48 hours so they can heal undisturbed.
- After 24 hours, clean gently with a fragrance free cleanser and clean hands, never a washcloth or sponge.
- Air dry or gently pat the brows, and apply only the aftercare serum we provide, not vaseline or petroleum ointments.
- Do not pick, rub or scratch as the brows scab and flake, as this pulls out pigment and can cause patchiness.
- Avoid sun, tanning beds, pools, saunas, steam rooms and hot baths for about three weeks.
- Avoid heavy sweating and the gym for 7 to 14 days, and avoid sleeping on your face for the first 10 days.
- Keep makeup, botox and facials away from the brows for about two weeks, and once healed, wear SPF 30 to 50 to protect the colour.
Please note: your brows will look about 20 to 40 percent bolder for the first day or two, then soften and lighten as they heal over roughly four to six weeks, with any unevenness corrected at your touch up. For the full healing timeline, read our PMU process guide.

Conclusion
Microblading is a precise, artistic way to gain natural, hair realistic brows that save you time every morning and lift your whole face. It shines on normal to dry skin with some existing hair, and when your skin is better suited to shading we will guide you toward fusion brows or ombre powder brows instead, so you always get the best healed result.
