What is the healing like?

Outer healing takes about 3 to 5 days. Avoid mascara, makeup and oil-based products around the eyes until healed. Eyes may be slightly swollen, dry or light sensitive for a few days, so bring sunglasses to wear home.

What is PMU Eyeliner?

Permanent Eyeliner eliminates the need to apply eyeliner with makeup and can be done on the upper and lower lash line. It frames the eyes and makes eyelashes appear thicker, darker and fuller. All permanent cosmetic procedures are a multi-session process. You are required to come back for at least one touch-up visit before the work is considered complete. Be prepared for the initial colour intensity to be significantly sharper, brighter or darker than the final outcome. It will take time for this transition as the outer layer of skin exfoliates. While these tattooed colours may initially simulate the exact colour and tone desired, they will not always remain a perfect match. Tattooed colours are constant, while your own skin colour varies depending on exposure to cold, heat, sun and circulatory changes.

How Do I Decide The Thickness Of The Eyeliner?

The procedure is done in two appointments. During the first session it is always best to be modest with thickness, line length and colour, as we can always add more at the second session. We will work with you to determine the perfect shape and placement for your specific features.

How Will My Eyes Look After Treatment?

There will be swelling typically for the first 24 to 48 hours. While the swelling starts going down right away and most people are back to normal by the following morning, plan on 48 hours of staying low key to be safe. The colour will appear darker the first week, then gradually lighten and may lightly scab.

How Do I Prepare For My Eyeliner PMU Appointment?

Please do not wear any eye makeup to your appointment. Remove contact lenses before the procedure and avoid wearing them for a minimum of 4 hours after. Do not take Aspirin, Niacin, Vitamin E, Vitamin C or Advil/Ibuprofen for 48 hours before the procedure. Avoid sun exposure and tanning for one week prior. Do not have eyelash extensions. Have them removed at least one week before your appointment. Do not use Latisse for a minimum of 3 months prior to the procedure. Other lash serums must be discontinued for at least 1 month prior. These serums make lids fragile and prone to bleeding during tattooing. You may resume using lash serums 2 to 4 weeks after the touch-up appointment.

What Are The Aftercare Instructions?

Do not wear any eye makeup for 1 week following the procedure. You will be given lint-free wipes soaked in distilled water. Please wipe the eyelid area once per hour for the first 3 hours. Apply ice as often as you like to reduce swelling, but make sure it is wrapped in a towel. You may apply a thin layer of the provided ointment to the lash line on days 2 and 3 if necessary. If the area starts to flake, leave it. Do not pick or peel off the skin. Keep your hands clean and avoid touching the treated areas. For at least 1 week, or until healing is complete, avoid excessive sweating, sun tanning, swimming and steam rooms. Keep the eye area as dry as possible for the first week. Pigments will slowly fade over time according to your metabolism, skin type, sun exposure, medications and lifestyle. Schedule maintenance visits to keep your eyeliner looking fresh. You must not donate blood for 1 year following your procedure (per Red Cross guidelines).

Will It Be Painful?

The eyeliner procedure is more psychologically daunting to most clients than anything else. Discomfort is relative as everyone has a different level of sensitivity. A topical numbing agent is applied to the eyelids prior to the procedure, and anaesthetic is applied during. Every effort is made to ensure you remain comfortable throughout.

Can I Get Lash Extensions or a Lash Lift After Having PMU Eyeliner?

Yes, lash extensions and lash lifts are compatible with cosmetic eyeliner once your eyeliner has fully healed, which typically takes 4 to 6 weeks. A few things to keep in mind: Lash extensions must be removed at least one week before your PMU eyeliner appointment, as noted in the prep instructions. After healing is complete you can have lash extensions reapplied with no issue. Lash lifts are also fine once healed. Inform your lash technician that you have cosmetic eyeliner so they avoid any strong chemical contact directly on the tattooed lash line. Lash serums (such as Latisse) must remain discontinued until 2 to 4 weeks after your touch-up appointment before resuming.

Will PMU Eyeliner Smudge, Bleed or Migrate Over Time?

PMU eyeliner is deposited into the dermal layer of the skin by a trained technician, so it will not smudge, run or wash off the way conventional eyeliner does. You can swim, sweat and shower without worrying. Pigment migration, where colour spreads beyond the intended line, is a risk associated with inexperienced application or placing pigment too deep. At Iconbrows, our artists are trained specifically in cosmetic tattooing around the delicate eye area to keep the line precise and controlled. Over the years the pigment will gradually soften and fade rather than spread. Periodic touch-ups keep the definition sharp and the colour true.

Will It Look Natural or Dramatic, and Can I Change the Style Later?

The look is entirely customisable. During your consultation and first session our artist will discuss line placement, thickness, colour (black or brown) and whether you would like a subtle lash-line enhancement or something with a little more definition and a slight wing. We always start conservatively at the first session and build during the touch-up, so you are never locked into more than you wanted. The style cannot be dramatically altered once healed without additional procedures, so the consultation stage is the right moment to communicate your preferences. The pigment does fade naturally over time, which gives flexibility at future touch-up appointments.

Is PMU Eyeliner Safe for Sensitive Eyes or Contact Lens Wearers?

Cosmetic eyeliner can actually be a great option for people with sensitive eyes or allergies to conventional makeup products, as it eliminates daily contact with mascaras and liquid liners that commonly cause irritation. For contact lens wearers: Remove your lenses before the appointment. You may not wear them for a minimum of 4 hours after the procedure, and longer if your eyes remain swollen or tender. Most clients are comfortable returning to their lenses within 48 hours. If you have a history of chronic dry eye, keloid scarring or known skin sensitivity to pigments, please mention this during your consultation. Clients who have had recent eye surgery, Lasik, cataracts or blepharoplasty should consult their physician before booking.

Can I Have PMU Eyeliner Done While Pregnant or Breastfeeding?

We do not perform cosmetic tattooing on clients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is a standard precaution across the permanent makeup industry. Pregnancy hormones can affect how pigment heals and retains colour, the immune system is altered during pregnancy, and any potential reaction to pigment or numbing products is best avoided at this time. We recommend waiting at least 3 months postpartum, or until you have finished breastfeeding and your body has had time to settle, before booking. We are happy to hold a consultation in the meantime so you are ready to go when the time is right.
